Week 15: Using Games for teaching

This week in class we discussed using games for teaching and learning. We learned about the progress that has been made in technology over the years to increase productivity.

I feel that growing up around games on the computer is very beneficial. In middle school and even late elementary school, I partook in playing many games on the computer, both fun and some educational. During school one could play games on the computer when finished with work and it would turn into an educational way to learn about computers an technology. From playing games that taught me about geography and math to competing with my friends to see who could type a paragraph the fastest, growing up with computer games was essential for me to become as technically apt as I am today.

Here is a video showing examples of computer games for children with educational benefits.

Week 14: Distance Education and Virtual School

Distance learning is the education technology of the future. This week's lesson was about distance learning. UF has just recently started a distance learning program where classes are fully available to be taken online from far away. This will help student travel and study abroad and also feel free to take internships without missing credit opportunities.

I have personally taken multiple classes online. I feel that they help me learn to balance my spare time and require me to put forth a lot of effort in a good way. In my college, specifically for my major of PR, multiple classes are now available online to take over summer so I will be free for internships.

This is a video showing about distance learning. It explains all about distance learning and the benefits.

Week 13: Creating a Professional Web Presence

Having your own web presence is a necessity in today's world. With constant technological updates and a need for social networking, everyone is needing a web presence of some sort.

This week we discussed making a professional web presence (website). We each were assigned to create our own personal web presence on google sites. Having a professional website allows not only the employer to see valuable information about yourself but friends and family can also check out your page and see what you have been up to. On the web site you can list gpa, projects, resumer, etc. Anything you may want a potential employer to see.

Having a professional website is great because it shows the public a more serious, professional side of you aside from your social facebook page.

Week 12: Social Tools and Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the technology of the future. Having social tools and the ability to use server based applications as opposed to having to send new information and files back and forth via email, etc is a great step in the IT world.

In our EME technology class we used Google Docs. Using this software was great, especially in my field of PR where I am constantly put into situations where I need to send information back and forth rapidly and keep it organized.

Social media tools are the new way of communicating. All the new social networking sites are here to stay, and they are benefiting people in more ways than one. Besides the obvious speed at which information is transported, people are now able to share ideas, videos, music all with the click of a mouse.

We were asked to make Delicious account which is a social bookmarking site. Here is the link to mine: http://www.delicious.com/simonhacker15

This is a video explaining social networking and using social media.

Week 11: Open Source Software

This week we learned about open source software. This technology has many uses and its popularity as a new tech tool continues to grow. The best part about using this new technology is that it is completely free. This beats many competing software companies that are very high priced.

Being a Public Relations student, I am always being given group projects and assignments, and having free open source software allows for a better flow of technology.

This new technology will only continue to grow and spread as it is passed freely through friends and families of users.

This video describes in detail open source software and even give you some sites. Enjoy.

Week 9: Podcasts

Podcasts are downloaded by the megabyte every day onto the computers, iPods, and MP3 players of millions of listeners each and every day. Technology has managed to take the American pastime of listening to radio programs – talk shows, instructional audio, and DJ mixes alike – and transformed it into an even more portable entity.

Personally, I enjoy listening to podcasts such as NPR and DJ Mix Daily because they provide a quality way of receiving the news and listening to music without the nuisance of commercials or music that doesn’t suit my taste. As a podcaster, one must be passionate about the subject he is covering because podcasting is truly a form of art.

Here is a video explain how podcasts are made and work.
